Law Enforcement Accreditation Program

Raise Your Standards

Accreditation is a progressive and time-proven method of assisting law enforcement agencies to calculate, measure, and improve their overall performance. The foundation of accreditation lies in the adoption of standards containing a clear statement of professional objectives. Participating agencies conduct a thorough self-analysis to determine how existing operations can be adapted to meet these standards and objectives. When the procedures are in place, a team of trained, independent assessors verifies that the applicable standards have been successfully implemented.

Accredited status represents a significant professional achievement. Accreditation acknowledges the implementation of best practices and policies that are conceptually sound and operationally effective. Policy and procedure based on Accreditation will not ensure mistake-free policing, nor an absence of litigation against law enforcement agencies and executives. However, comprehensive, and effective leadership through professionally based policy development is directly influenced by a law enforcement program that is thorough, complete, and obtainable, and based on standards that reflect professionalism.

MPCCF State Accreditation Standards

Accountability

MOPCA’s Accreditation standards give the CEO, Chief and Command Staff a proven management system of well-defined lines of authority, sound training, clearly written directives, and routine reports that support decision making & justify resource allocation.

Governmental Support

Accreditation status is tangible proof of an agency’s commitment to excellence in all areas of operation – service delivery, resource management, and leadership. Upholding the highest standards of professionalism results in greater governmental confidence in the accredited agency and its abilities, and reflects positively on the city as a whole.

Reduced Liability

It is not uncommon for agencies who have earned Accredited status to report a subsequent reduction in the cost of their liability insurance. Additionally, agencies may also be eligible for reimbursement on a portion of their accreditation fees. (Please consult with your plan administrator.)

Stronger Legal Defense

Agencies who have committed to earning and maintaining Accreditation have a more stable foundation and are better able to defend themselves against civil lawsuits. Furthermore, many agencies report a decrease in legal action against them once they have achieved accreditation status.

Enhanced Community Relations

Accreditation embodies the precepts of problem-oriented policing. It will create an opportunity for law enforcement agencies and citizens to work hand-in-hand to mitigate some of the challenges that face law enforcement agencies, and provides more direction about how a community’s expectations can be addressed.
